Pyorrhoea

Pyorrhoea is characterized by copius discharge of pus from the roots of the teeth and gums. The pus is often swallowed along with food and is absorbed into the gastrointestinal tract causing further diseases.

Causes :

Pyorrhoea is caused by bacterial infections in oral cavity. Diseases like periodentitis, gingivitis and some chronic diseases cause pyorrhoea. Poor oral hygiene is the main cause of pyorrhoea in addition to indigestion and hyperacidity. When food particles remain in oral cavity for long time, they get rotten and provide ideal environment for growth of bacteria in oral cavity. These bacteria eventually infect gums, bones and dental ligaments and cause pyorrhoea.

Symptoms

 Bleeding while brushing teeth
 Tenderness, swelling on gums
 Periodental abscess
 Bad breath

View Of Ayurveda

From Ayurvedic perspectives, pyorrhoea reflects vitiation of rasa and rakta dhatus. This vitiation is caused by impaired digestion. The toxins produced during digestion mix with these two dhatus and then accumulate in gums and oral cavity. They come out during actions like brushing teeth. So pyorrhoea is treated as a certain body energy disorder in Ayurvedic terms, caused by poor digestion.

Ayurvedic treatment consists of both internal and external medication. Digestion is restored with herbal treatments, which ensures the proper daily elimination of toxins. Cleansing herbs for the blood are administered and tooth powders recommended to eliminate pus formation and bleeding.
